Mission, Vision and History

Girls and Women in Motion (GWIM) was first created in 2018, as a legacy of the KEEPONMOVING T.O. community program, to provide opportunities for girls and women of all ages to engage in all forms of movement while breaking down barriers that hinder them from doing so. GWIM looks to provide an entry point for individuals of all skill and ability levels into sport and physical activity; we strive to provide affordable and accessible programming for East Scarborough, Malvern, and the Durham region. We are for women and girls, by women and girls. GWIM is currently in the process of being registered as a non-profit organization; until then, we operate in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough.

Mission: To be both a hub of information and provide affordable and accessible movement-based opportunities to women and girls from equity-deserving groups and communities in East Scarborough, Malvern, and the Durham Region.

Vision: To break down barriers surrounding women and girls in sport, physical activity and recreation through inclusive programming, accessible resources, educational and empowering initiatives, and mentorship.

  • Health: Educate and engage women and girls in activities focused around good health (physical, mental, social)
  • Accessibility: Reduce barriers to participation in movement-based activities, including financial barriers, geographical barriers, and societal barriers, amongst others.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: taking an intersectional approach to providing a safe space for girls and women from equity-deserving groups to feel welcomed and celebrated.
