Statement on Anti-Black Racism

Girls and Women in Motion was created as a community organization to fill the gaps in sport and physical activity programming, aiming to be both affordable and accessible for girls and women in Scarborough and the eastern GTA. First and foremost, we are a platform that intentionally battles the lack of representation in sport and works to create inclusive spaces for girls and women of racialized and marginalized communities to move in.

We have been silent on the recent tragedies and deaths in Canada and the States. George Floyd. Regis Korchinski. Breonna Taylor. Ahmaud Arbery. And many more. Now, and everyday, is not the time to be silent. Systemic, institutional and individual racism, and any other types of oppression and injustice against Black people, Indigenous people, Muslim people, and people within other racialized and margainlized communities, should never be tolerated. Girls and Women in Motion stands in solidarity with the Black community.

We remain committed to our core values and mission of diversity and inclusion, amplifying the voices of girls and women of colour within our community, and creating safe, accessible, and inclusive sport and recreation programming.

As a community, we [GWIM] must do better. Moving forward, we are committed to the following. We will ensure:

  1. All coaches, volunteers and staff that represent our organization take part in anti-racism training and other equity and inclusion-based resources and training.
  2. We continue to work and build relationships with other like-minded organizations that provide opportunities for and focus on BIPOC.
  3. We continue to actively seek feedback from our community members and participants on an ongoing basis.
  4. Coaches, volunteers and other supporting members for GWIM are recruited from BIPOC communities.

These commitments are not short-term, but life-long. As we grow, we will reflect on how these commitments can be strengthened, and address additional opportunities to further engage community members and work alongside other organizations.
